I abhor this practice. I don't want to start preaching animal rights on this forum, as I know everyone has a right to their own opinion, but I don't think enough people are aware of how these amazing creatures are captured it is a slaughterhouse or how penning the dolphins eventually kills them. I also wonder if people know that when the hunt is on 's of them are killed in order to get the ones they want.

I personally would not be interested in supporting what I consider to be a cruel and inhumane act. Just my opinion! So you guys all jumped in? My son read that over my shoulder and was jealous This is an awesome thread. You must be very proud of your children for making such a mature decision not to go visit the dolphins in captivity.

This is a very interesting article and I avoided this type of activity for that very reason; makes me wonder if those who choose to visit this type of attraction would be convinced otherwise by reading this. I would like to comment that here in the US, if you choose to swim with the dolphins, for example, in Discovery Cove in Orlando , or to see them at Seaworld , the dolphins are not harmed in such a way.

Anheiser-Busch is dedicated to providing safety for their animals and do not abuse the animals that you see inside the parks drinking straws aren't even allowed in the parks as they are safety hazards for the animals! Most if not all of the animals were actually captured for medical reasons, as Seaworld has the largest animal rescue effort in the country.

Just as all of the domestic animals used in their shows are from animal shelters. I just wanted to mention this as the article didn't go into detail about the US, but suggested minimal efforts.

This was very considerate of you to post this for others. Hopefully many others will do what your family did. Thank you for posting this. The only way to stop the inhumane capture is to stop making it profitable. Tourists around the world will need to stop spending money at facilities that use captured animals. Dolphins are intelligent creatures with their own society.

Their pods are destroyed because of these captures. Their intelligence and mostly gentle natures have contributed to their impending demise. We live by the ocean and see dolphins in the wild often. They swim along the beach in pods, play with boaters and kayakers and sometimes surf a wave with the surfers. It is illegal to approach or or pursue the dolphin, but they are curious animals and sometimes come near humans. Everyone on the beach stops and watches whenever they are around and when they are finished playing, they go off into the sea.

Your description was beautiful. They are highly intelligent, sensitive animals, and should be treated, as all animals should, with kindness and respect.

Sometimes the choices, that we encounter or are blessed with, come, with many different thoughts to think about before we make this decision. I hope you don't mind me sharing a few other things to think about for anyone that might considering swimming with wild Dolphins. Sometimes we can be lead to believe, that something so incredibly natural, lovely and simple as jumping out of a boat, to swim with these incredible creatures is harmless. Please take a few moment to read over the following links to information from a US federal agency NOAA , quotes, and review of literature pertaining to swimming wild Dolphins.

NOAA Fisheries is the federal agency, a division of the Department of Commerce, responsible for the stewardship of the nation's living marine resources and their habitat. NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the management, conservation and protection of living marine resources within the United States' Exclusive Economic Zone water three to mile offshore. NOAA Fisheries is also concerned that commercial "swim-with-dolphin" programs in the wild risk harassing the animals, as such programs seek out and interact with dolphins in a manner that has the potential to disturb the animals' behavioral patterns.

Swim-with-dolphin activities in the Southeast United States are of particular concern because they are sometimes facilitated by, or capitalize on, illegal dolphin feeding. NOAA Fisheries has received reports of people being bitten, pulled under water or seriously injured while trying to closely approach, feed, swim with, touch or interact with wild marine mammals. Swimmers have also been attacked by sharks while swimming with wild marine mammals, most recently in California and Hawaii. For more than a decade, NOAA Fisheries has worked to educate the public about the harmful consequences of close interactions with wild marine mammals.

These efforts have focused on the harm that human interactions can cause to the animals, including boat strikes, disturbance of vital behaviors and social groups, separation of mothers from young, abandonment of resting areas, vandalism and habituation to humans. NOAA Fisheries has worked to highlight these activities as a public safety concern in response to numerous reports of people being injured during encounters with wild marine mammals.

NOAA Fisheries has developed recommended viewing guidelines for admiring wild marine mammals. Swim-with-dolphin activities in the Southeast and Hawaii are of additional concern because some are facilitated by illegal feeding or take place in critical resting and sheltering areas for the animals. An in-depth review conducted by NOAA Fisheries biologists, non-governmental marine mammal experts, and the Marine Mammal Commission, determined that feeding and otherwise closely interacting with marine mammals in the wild alters their natural behavior in ways that place them at increased risk of injury and death.

Repeated exposure to humans and human activities has been correlated with placing these animals at greater risk of incidental interactions with vessels and fishing activities, vandalism, and ingestion of inappropriate or contaminated food items. In addition, feeding may impact their ability or willingness to forage for food, which is of particular concern for young animals who need to learn foraging skills. The stewardship of these resources benefits the nation by supporting coastal communities that depend upon them, while helping to provide safe and healthy seafood to consumers and recreational opportunities for the American public.
